"Mirage" Exhibition by Jaume Plensa at Carré Sainte-Anne

"Jaume PLENSA is part of the long tradition of Catalan sculptors, of which he is today the foremost representative, who have conceived their work in a dialogue between Mediterranean memory and universality. For several decades, the sculptor has been showcasing a body of work on the international stage that questions the human condition at the scale of public space. From the famous Crown Fountain at Millennium Park in Chicago to his installation at the San Giorgio Maggiore Abbey for the Venice Biennale in 2015, his silent figures translate into space a deep meditation on identity, vulnerability, and language. Bodies woven from letters, intertwined alphabets, faces with closed eyes absorbed in a dense interiority: this iconography suggests that humanity is a text in the making, creation a palimpsest of languages and cultures. Following its reopening in 2025 with the JR exhibition, Carré Sainte-Anne also asserts a southern and universal ambition, both heritage and contemporary, aware of the diversity and richness of its roots. After discovering and loving this place for "the intensity that emanates from its walls, its stones, and its light," Jaume PLENSA will propose a large-scale installation this summer, designed for the verticality of the nave and its unique history, a rare encounter questioning the notions of contemplation and elevation, as well as the capacity of contemporary art to weave connections between memories and territories. Numa HAMBURSIN, curator of the exhibition Biography Born in Barcelona in 1955, Jaume Plensa is an essential figure in international contemporary sculpture, much of whose work is specifically designed for public spaces. His sculptures are present around the world: "Crown Fountain" at Millennium Park in Chicago; "We" at the foot of The Shard in London; "Water’s Soul" in Jersey City facing Manhattan; "Julia" on Plaza de Colón in Madrid; "The House of Light and Love" in Taipei. In France, his works can be seen in front of the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Caen, at Port Vauban in Antibes, Place Masséna in Nice, and Place des Ormeaux in Valence. Numerous museums in Europe, the United States, and Asia have showcased Plensa's works. Among his major exhibitions are the one at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona in 1996, which was later presented at the Jeu de Paume National Gallery in Paris and at Malmö Konsthall in Sweden the following year; and "Genus and Species" at the Nasher Sculpture Center, Dallas, Texas in 2010. In 2011, a large selection of his sculptures was exhibited at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in West Bretton (UK), which earned this institution the Most Magnificent Attraction award in 2011. His work was recently exhibited at the Museum of Art and Archaeology in Valence as part of a public commission, as well as at the Fundación Telefónica in Madrid. In June 2025, he presented "Forgotten Dreams" as part of Art Basel Unlimited, confirming his recognition on the global art scene. In the fall of 2025, a major retrospective was dedicated to him at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in Michigan (USA), one of the largest sculpture parks in North America. A recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the National Fine Arts Prize awarded by the Catalan government in 1997, Jaume Plensa was made a Knight of Arts and Letters in France in 1993. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. In Spain, he received the National Fine Arts Prize in 2012 and the prestigious Velázquez Prize in 2013. With "Together," an exhibition on the sidelines of the 56th Venice Biennale at the Basilica San Giorgio Maggiore, Jaume Plensa received the Global Fine Art Award for Best Public Outdoor Installation in 2015. In 2025, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center. Exhibition "Design According to Pierre Paulin 1927-2009"

This is the major summer exhibition at the Musée Fabre, and the first dedicated to design! Until November 1st, come and observe the colorful works of Pierre Paulin (and sometimes even sit on them!) Pierre Paulin explored all the ways of being a designer over the course of five decades. Visionary and demanding, this strong personality offers through his work, or his craft as he preferred to say, a true journey into the era that shaped our century, transforming lifestyles and technologies. The exhibition's layout is fluid, providing beautiful perspectives on reconstructed interior arrangements and significant milestones that mark both Pierre Paulin's career and the cultural and historical context in which it unfolded. Diverse and informative, it allows visitors to discover how a designer's spirit evolves from the commission to the delivery of an object. Interactive, it offers all sorts of activities in its workshop lounge to experience the designer's profession. Spectacular, it showcases the most monumental installations of the work. The Video Barnum, conceived in 1985, offers an immersive experience orchestrated by Paulin, Paulin, Paulin and Sounds Like Paulin. From Tuesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 6 PM. Exhibition "First Times / First Photos" at the Pavillon Populaire

The Pavillon Populaire presents the exhibition "First Times / First Photos" curated by the French photography specialist Luce LEBART, Independent Artistic Director responsible for the 2026-2027 programming of the Pavillon Populaire. An invitation to a playful and scholarly journey through 200 years of innovations and experiments in photography. The exhibition brings together a selection of "first times" that are technical, aesthetic, scientific, and societal, from the initial attempts of inventors to recent images of galaxy births, including the first photographs transmitted remotely, the first performed image, the first photography book, not to mention the first day of school, or even the first "bug" in the history of photography. Iconic photographers are also given a voice as they share in images "Their First Times" and through them, their encounter with photography. Visitors will discover the first attempts and images of Henri Cartier Bresson, Bernard Plossu, Martin Parr, and Boris Mikhaïlhov. The exhibition highlights the connections between contemporary innovations and past experiments, but it also narrates the economic and industrial stakes that underpin the inventors' research and their strategies to ensure recognition and legacy through the protection of their intellectual and commercial property. From the "photocyclist" to the "phototrap," the ingenious patents and quirky brands will delight and surprise visitors. The exhibition will also unveil the hidden side of inventions through the controversies that arose in the race for innovation: the stakes of authorship in the invention of color or the grid, for example. There is also a significant focus on tests and trials, not forgetting the inventions that went nowhere. "Try again, fail again, fail better": these famous words from Samuel Beckett are a recurring theme of the exhibition, whose journey through the multiple inventions of photography is viewed through the lens of experimentation. There is certainly not one invention but multiple inventions of photography. In the background of the exhibition, 4 contemporary works resonate with images from the past while several photographic "first times" related to the history of the city of Montpellier and its region punctuate the journey. The exhibition is accompanied by an eponymous catalog published by Spector Books (June 2026). Practical Information From July 1 to August 30: Tuesday to Sunday 11am-1pm and 2pm-7pm. From September 1 to November 1: Tuesday to Sunday 10am-1pm and 2pm-6pm. Free admission.

Exhibition "The Garden in Motion" by Ella Zadok

The Espace Saint-Ravy is pleased to host, from September 17 to October 18, 2026, the exhibition The Garden in Motion, featuring a selection of works by artist Ella Zadok. Through layers of oil painting, pastel, and drawing, the artist brings to life a representation of a landscape in perpetual transformation, where memory reinvents what the eye has perceived. Her works invite the visitor to a contemplative and deeply intimate experience. Opening on Wednesday, September 16 at 6:30 PM. Rooted in direct observation of the living, the paintings gathered in the exhibition The Garden in Motion arise from the time spent by the artist in the heart of gardens, ponds, and plant landscapes. Water lilies, flowers, and fragments of vegetation become the starting point for a work that oscillates between observation and memory. The drawings and studies made on-site serve as the foundation for a process that continues in the studio, where memories, sensations, and imagination gradually transform the observed forms. More than a representation of the landscape, these works seek to convey the intimate experience of traversing it. Created with oil and oil stick on large formats, they explore the expressive possibilities of pictorial material. The layers are built up, erased, and then reappear, leaving the image in perpetual transformation. Between figuration and abstraction, each canvas becomes a space where gesture, color, and material carry as much meaning as the subject itself. The exhibition engages in dialogue with the history of landscape painting, extending to the languages of contemporary abstraction, while affirming painting as a living, deeply relevant medium. At a time when images multiply and are consumed instantly, these works celebrate the unique ability of painting to slow down the gaze, to give a sensitive presence to the world, and to renew our way of perceiving it. They invite the visitor not only to look at nature but to experience it through the materiality and poetry of painting. "I am interested in what is alive, changing, and impossible to freeze. Through these paintings, I hope to invite the gaze to slow down, to regain a form of sensitive attention to the plant world and to the way we inhabit landscapes. For me, painting is a way to enter into dialogue with what transcends us: time, memory, and the silent metamorphoses of nature." Ella Zadok. Artist Biography Originally from the United Kingdom, Ella Zadok currently develops her practice between the south of France and England. She began her artistic training in 2015 with a preparatory diploma in art and design (Foundation) in the UK. In 2017, she joined the Plymouth College of Art. After an Erasmus exchange at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Montpellier, she chose to continue her studies there and obtained her art degree. Her work has been the subject of several solo and group exhibitions in France and the UK and is now included in private collections across Europe. After presenting her works at the Grad Show at the Morley Gallery in London in 2018, she continued a path of exhibitions in France and the UK. Her production has notably been shown in venues dedicated to contemporary art and heritage, including the Henri-Prades Archaeological Museum in Lattes as part of the exhibition "LUCY IN THE SKY" in 2020, as well as several group exhibitions at the Céret Printmaking Center and the Palais des Congrès in Perpignan in 2022. Since 2022, Ella Zadok has also developed a regular collaboration with Tralala Galerie, where she has presented several exhibitions in Collioure and then in Perpignan. Her work was subsequently showcased in solo exhibitions at the Vue sur Cours Gallery in Narbonne in 2025-2026, and then at La Capelleta and the Galerie Art Sant Roch in Céret in 2026.

The Man Who Drew Trees

To pay tribute to Francis Hallé, a great botanist and ardent defender of biodiversity who passed away in December 2025, the University of Montpellier is hosting an exhibition retracing his main commitments to life. A professor of botany at UM and a specialist in humid tropical forests, he dedicated his life to the study and protection of primary forests. Concerned with observing without destroying, he initiated the creation of the Radeau des cimes, a revolutionary device that allows exploration of the canopy, which he led from 1986 to 2003. This suspended laboratory welcomed researchers from around the world and revealed the immense biological richness of these ecosystems. A pioneer of "plant architecture," Francis Hallé was also a talented illustrator. His notebooks are filled with precise and poetic sketches, reflecting his unique perspective on the plant world.

Exhibition "Dreamland" - Reno Lemaire

The Dominique Bagouet Space invites you from October 14, 2026, to March 21, 2027, for an exhibition dedicated to the Montpellier mangaka Reno Lemaire and his series Dreamland. Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday from 10 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 6 PM Dreamland is the dream come true of a kid from Montpellier; the story of a young reader of Japanese mangas, American comics, and Franco-Belgian comics, a video game enthusiast, who dreams of drawing in turn, practicing by copying, experimenting, and learning as a self-taught artist. From a high school student at Mas-de-Tesse, now renamed Jules-Guesde, who became a student at Paul-Valéry, he observes everything around him and listens to his city, its streets, its squares, its café terraces, the echoes of conversations heard, the life situations experienced… Everything that will later be transfigured, reinvented, and serve as the backdrop for Terrence's adventures. From his years of learning, Dreamland was born, a project submitted to Pika Editions in the mid-2000s, with the first volume released in 2006. It took courage, audacity, and probably a bit of recklessness to follow in the footsteps of the Japanese manga masters! With determination and talent, this unconditional admirer of Dragon Ball and One Piece has plenty. With his foundational readings, he quickly perceives the incredible narrative potential of manga, and its ability to create new, coherent, rich, and ever-evolving worlds. To meet the expectations of a very demanding audience, readers who were long skeptical about the possibility of a manga written by a Frenchman, Reno Lemaire works tirelessly, constantly drawing, re-evaluating his past works. Imagined, written, and drawn for the first time in Montpellier, Dreamland is twenty years old, but the adventure is far from over. Author Biography Reno is a Montpellier author. Self-taught, he has been expressing himself in panels and speech bubbles since the age of 7. Discovering manga at 15 completely changes his way of telling stories. The graphics, dynamics, format, and layout constantly stimulate his imagination, and he churns out pages and series on his high school desk. In 2004, at the age of 24, he proposed a one-shot of Dreamland, which he wrote in a week, to Pika Édition, and began to be pre-published as early as 2005. Reno develops his graphic language through various media: video games such as J-RPGs or Capcom fighting games, comics like Petit Spirou, Asterix, and Lanfeust, animated films like Disney's The Lion King, mangas including Dragon Ball, Bastard, and Dragon Quest - The Adventure of Dai, and animes such as Goldorak, Saint Seiya, Thundercats, and Olive and Tom. Dreamland is his first published work. With the success of the series, Reno has gained unprecedented recognition in France for an author. His always innovative graphic style and sense of storytelling are the main reasons for this. But he has also made a name for himself through the many hours spent signing his works at conventions and festivals. His constant good humor, his contagious passion for his work, and his regularity in releasing volumes have helped him build a loyal audience that grows with each new release! He was one of the first to form a studio "like in Japan," with assistants, in France. Salim Kafiz and Romain Lemaire (the author of Everdark) assisted him from volumes 1 to 15. Since volume 20, he has two new assistants, P-E and Geo. The Dreamland series in a few numbers includes: 24 volumes of 230 pages, with a 25th volume set to be released in 2027, over 230 chapters, an artbook of 400 pages, a mook, a new edition, the Remaster edition, for which he completely redrew the first ten volumes, the first French manga published and still ongoing, 800,000 copies sold, and a print run of 25,000 copies for each new volume, an anime currently in production, numerous merchandise and figurines… In 2018, Reno Lemaire published in Japan, in the magazine Tezucomi, a one-shot in homage to Osamu Tezuka's Leo the Lion. He designed the first audio manga for France Culture, Doruido. In September 2024, Dreamland will be published in Japan by the publisher Euromanga. In October 2024, a new series, Free Quest, will be released, for which he will write the script and storyboard, with the young mangaka Néo on art. In March 2025, he will publish in the first European manga magazine ISSHO, a mini-series MOTHER JACK, with Kana Editions. In 2026, the manga will be adapted into an animated series, produced by the French studio La Chouette Compagnie and broadcast on the anime streaming platforms ADN and Crunchyroll.

25th Edition of the Animation Film Festival

From October 17 to 31, the Émile Zola, Federico Garcia Lorca, Victor Hugo (Montpellier), Albert Camus (Clapiers), Jean Giono (Pérols), Françoise Giroud (Castries), Jules Verne (Saint-Jean-de-Védas), and La Gare (Pignan) libraries participate, in a thousand and one ways, in the 25th edition of the Animation Film Festival. On the occasion of this event, the Émile Zola library offers a "pinned" weekend on October 16 and 17 featuring Pierre-Luc Granjon, a director with a unique universe. Screenwriter, animator, director, he enjoys experimenting with different techniques from one film to another. His latest film Les Bottes de la nuit, winner of the Crystal for Best Short Film at the Annecy 2025 festival, is made using a pin screen, a very rare animation tool. Pierre-Luc Granjon will accompany the screening of his film and will introduce the audience, alongside Alexandre Noyer, a pin screen maker, to this fascinating animation technique.
