Scientific and technical culture

Make science a lever for understanding and taking action on climate and environmental issues. This is the ambition of the Metropole of Montpellier, which intends to facilitate dialogue between research, universities and citizens, in order to make scientific culture accessible and inclusive.
Temps de lecture : 4 minutes

Action plan

  • Disseminating scientific knowledge:promoting science to all audiences, especially young people, citizens far from research centers, and vulnerable populations.
  • Scientific mediation:strengthen the role of institutions such as the network of media libraries and other public facilities to serve as bridges between science and society.
  • Ecological commitment:use science as a tool to raise awareness and support citizens in the ecological transition, highlighting solutions based on scientific research.
  • Valuing scientific and university heritage: highlighting the historical and scientific wealth of Montpellier's universities, by rehabilitating emblematic sites and opening them up to the general public.

Raising awareness of environmental issues

In order to raise citizens' awareness of ecological issues (climate disruption, pollution, loss of biodiversity...), the Metropole and the City of Montpellier are developing a territorial ecological mediation strategy in collaboration with local players.

Events are being organized with this in mind, participatory workshops and awareness-raising campaigns in the city's media libraries and other facilities (Zoo de Lunaret) and Métropole (Écolothèque).

What's in it for us? Encouraging a transformation in lifestyles.

Enhancing university heritage

With a view to strengthening the link between science, society and ecological transition, the Metropole of Montpellier is committed to enhancing its university heritage. In concrete terms, this involves rehabilitating and highlighting emblematic sites such as the Jardin des Plantes, the Institut Botanique and the Faculté de Médecine, which will be open to the general public via a museum trail.

The latter will not only enable visitors to discover the history of medicine and botany, but also address today's major public health and environmental issues.

These actions also support the Metropole's Unesco World Heritage candidacy, as a "Memory of the World".

Media libraries as mediation centers

First French public reading network to commit to the Réseau des médiathèques et de la culture scientifique, the Metropole's media libraries are veritable centers of mediation.

What do they enable? Access to scientific information, the promotion of critical thinking, encounters with researchers, the decompartmentalization of scientific culture...

In fact, regular events, such as conferences, exhibitions, and interactive workshops, will enable the general public to gain a better understanding of scientific issues and strengthen the dialogue between researchers and citizens.
