Culture and heritage

Culture and heritage are the focus of an ambitious and proactive policy on the part of the Metropole and the City of Montpellier.
Temps de lecture : 2 minutes

6 strategic priorities

  1. The support and emancipation of audiences through culture, with particular attention to the development of artistic and cultural actions aimed at the youngest audiences, those of tomorrow.
  2. The development of a hospitality approach towards established or emerging artists who participate in the vitality of the territory.
  3. The deployment of culture and heritage in public spaces and support for the transformation of the City through culture and heritage.
  4. Artistic, cultural and heritage influence, linked to a heritage of excellence in many fields, with a concern to encourage the most innovative approaches, to think of tomorrow's cultural venues, to ensure the necessary transitions on the most inescapable societal issues.
  5. The development of ideas, knowledge and heritage, around emblematic projects, facilities or events.
  6. The invention of new forms of territorial cooperation.

Grants, funds and schemes dedicated to culture

To implement this policy of the Metropole and the City of Montpellier, the Pôle Culture et Patrimoine works with cultural professionals, supporting them in their endeavors.

Support for artistic creation, heritage enhancement... Several schemes and funds are in place, including:

The allocation of grants, intended for associations, companies and cultural professionals.

  • A residency scheme to support artists in their research and creation process.
  • A fonds d'aide à la diffusion théâtrale, to support artistic vitality in its territory, by enabling wider distribution of shows.
  • A Convention de Généralisation de l'Éducation Artistique et Culturelle (CGEAC), which benefits children and young people aged 0 to 25.
  • A support fund for metropolitan heritage, set up in the territory's 31 communes, to support projects to restore built and movable heritage.

A key location for film shoots, the Montpellier Metropolis supports the Cultural and Creative Industries. The Bureau d'Accueil des Tournages has existed since 2010, reinforcing Montpellier's position as a major location for film production.

An administrative and cultural centre

The Pôle Culture et Patrimoine occupies 2 buildings: the Hôtel d'Aurès and the former episcopal palace.

Beyond administrative uses, these buildings also host artist residencies, shows or cultural events, as well as exhibitions (work by Esba MO.CO. students, Euro-Africa Biennial...).
