Montpellier's pedestrian areas

Comédie/Esplanade/Antigone : circulation limitée des EDPM

Afin de protéger les personnes les plus vulnérables (piétons, enfants, personnes âgées, en situation de handicap), la circulation des EDPM (Engins de Déplacement Personnel Motorisés : trottinettes électriques, monoroues, gyropodes, gyroskates et hoverboards) est interdite sur les principaux axes de la zone piétonne du centre-ville :

  • Secteur Antigone, depuis l'avenue Henri Frenay jusqu'à l'esplanade de l'Europe (voir détail du plan) ;
  • Place de la Comédie ;
  • Esplanade Charles de Gaulle ;
  • Rue Jacques Cœur, du passage Bruyas jusqu'à la rue de la Loge ; 
  • Rue de la Loge ;
  • Rue des Étuves ;
  • Rue de Maguelone, de la rue Joffre jusqu'à la place de la Comédie ; 
  • Rue Boussairolles, de la rue Alfred Bruyas jusqu'à la place de la Comédie ;
  • Avenue Frédéric Mistral.

Il est dorénavant obligatoire de mettre pied à terre sous peine de s'exposer à une amende de 90€, d'une saisie de la trottinette si celle-ci est débridée ou en défaut d'assurance. L'arrêté est permanent, de jour comme de nuit, toute la semaine.

Depuis le 27 novembre 2025, la galerie cyclable de la Comédie permet aux cyclistes et EDPM de traverser le secteur Comédie sans gêner les piétons, avec une vitesse maximale autorisée de 25km/h.

Principes de l'aire piétonne

Il existe plusieurs aires piétonnes à Montpellier : Écusson, Antigone, Celleneuve, Richter, Port Marianne et Odysseum. L'aire piétonne est un espace réservé à la circulation des piétons, usagers prioritaires sur tous les modes de circulation à l'exception du tramway.

Secteur Comédie/Esplanade/Antigone : la circulation des EDPM est interdite, obligation de mettre pied à terre sous peine d'une amende de 90€. 

Autres secteurs : les vélos, les trottinettes classiques, les trottinettes électriques et les véhicules ayant une autorisation spécifique (livreurs, riverains, commerçants, taxis, artisans...) sont autorisés à y circuler à l’allure du pas (6 km/h), sans gêner les piétons.

Le code de la route interdit le stationnement en aire piétonne. Seul un arrêt limité dans le temps est possible pour les véhicules autorisés.

Pour accéder aux aires piétonnes en voiture, des autorisations régulières ou exceptionnelles peuvent être délivrées.

Sanctions encourues :

  • Véhicules motorisés jusqu’à 135 € pour circulation ou stationnement non autorisé.
  • Cyclistes et trottinettes électriques : 90 € pour refus de priorité aux piétons ou pour vitesse supérieure à 6 km/h.

For a move

2 days' access maximum.

Requirements if you are a private individual:

  • Proof of address less than three months old in pedestrian area
  • Vehicle registration

Requirements if you are a professional:

  • K-bis document
  • Company vehicle registration document

For a worksite

15 days maximum renewable access, authorization for 2h in the morning and 2h in the afternoon.

  • K-bis document less than three months old or valid artisan's card or I.N.S.E.E declaration
  • Company vehicle registration document

For an event

Limited duration of access depending on authorizations issued by the relevant departments for sporting, cultural or social events, event-related events or catering services

Documents to provide if you are an individual, cultural or sporting association:

  • Authorization issued by the relevant services (occupation of the public domain) to organize and host events (sporting, cultural or social) in the pedestrian area
  • Vehicle registration

Catering services

Required documents:

  • K-Bis document less than 3 months old or valid artisan's card or I.N.S.E.E declaration.
  • Vehicle registration

  • Types of access: permanent.
  • One access right per parking space.

Pieces to provide:

  • Title of ownership or rental lease or council tax for the garage less than 3 months old.
  • Ground registration document for the vehicle in the name of the beneficiary or, failing this, the insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Type of access: 2 times 30 minutes/day
  • One right of access per vehicle

Required documents:

  • Title of ownership (resident owner) or rental lease or council tax or electricity bill or telephone bill less than 3 months old.
  • Vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing this, the insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Type of access: 2 times 30 minutes/day
  • One access right per business (manager and/or co-manager) or per association (president and/or treasurer)

Required documents:

  • K-bis of the company (in Pedestrian Area), or commercial lease or title deed less than 3 months old.
  • Updated articles of association (in pedestrian areas) and title deed or lease less than 3 months old.
  • Vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing that, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Troubleshooting: access 2h/day at all times, one right of access per commercial vehicle.
  • Construction sites: access 2h/day between 7am and 8pm, one right of access per commercial vehicle.
  • Funeral parlors: access 2h/day at all times, one right of access per commercial vehicle.

Required documents:

  • Valid artisan's card or company K-bis less than 3 months old.
  • Company vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing that, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Type of access: 2h/day from 7am to 8pm
  • One access right per vehicle

Pieces to provide:

  • I.N.S.E.E. declaration. declaration less than 3 months old
  • Company ten-year insurance certificate.
  • Commercial vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing that, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Access type: permanent 1h
  • One access right per vehicle

Required documents:

  • Caducée or healthcare professional card.
  • Title of ownership (resident owner) or lease less than 3 months old.
  • Vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing this, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Access type: permanent 1h
  • One access right per vehicle

Required documents:

  • Valid GIG/GIC card.
  • Title of ownership (resident owner) or lease less than 3 months old.
  • Vehicle registration document in the name of the beneficiary or, failing this, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the name of the beneficiary.

  • Access type: permanent 1h
  • One access right per vehicle

Required documents:

  • Professional card or salary slip or certificate from the requesting department.
  • Vehicle registration document, or failing this, insurance certificate in the applicant's name.

  • Type of access: 2 times 30 minutes/day
  • One access right per vehicle

Required documents:

  • Title of ownership (resident owner) or rental lease or council tax or electricity bill or telephone bill less than 3 months old.
  • Medical certificate less than three months old in the name of the elderly or disabled person to be served.
  • Vehicle registration document in the applicant's name or, failing that, insurance certificate for the vehicle used in the applicant's name.

30-minute permanent access, one right of access per vehicle.

Renew your right of access

For individuals

The right of access must be renewed every year on the anniversary date of creation.

  • At the Guichet : on presentation of proof of residence in the Aire Piétonne less than 3 months old (electricity bill or telephone bill or council tax or rent receipt).
  • By e-mail : renouvellementbadge@montpellier.fr en joindre un justificatif de domicile de moins de 3 mois (facture d'électricité ou facture de téléphone ou taxe d'habitation ou quittance de loyer).

For professionals

The right of access must be renewed every 2 years on the anniversary date of creation.

  • At the Guichet: on presentation of proof of the Company's K-bis less than three months old or valid artisan's card or I.N.S.E.E. declaration of the auto entreprise less than three months old.
  • By e-mail: renouvellementbadge@montpellier.fr en joignant en PJ le document K-bis de la société de moins de 3 mois ou la carte d'artisan en cours de validité ou la déclaration I.N.S.E.E.de l'auto entreprise de moins de trois mois.
