High-level sportsmen and women with disabilities and able-bodied athletes from the region help promote Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's image of excellence in national competitions right up to the international stage.
The pride of the Metropole's young sportsmen and women, they contribute to the sporting effervescence of their facilities and clubs, and convey values of cohesion, inclusion and commitment. This dynamic of sporting excellence is a central element of the Metropole's sports policy, which has contributed to the award of the "Terre de Jeux 2024" label and recognition as "Centres de Préparation aux Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques 2024".
This support scheme for top-level athletes illustrates the implementation of Axis 2 of the Metropolitan Sports Policy, voted on October 3, 2023.
2 financial assistance schemes
In order to encourage and support the training and promotion of these champions to the top level, the Metropole has launched 2 individual financial aid schemes aimed at top-level athletes licensed with a metropolitan sports club and registered, where applicable, on ministerial lists :
- Development of sports performance: an annual scheme aimed at supporting selected athletes
- Ambassadrice & Ambassadeur du sport: a biannual scheme valuing athletes who have achieved significant performances.
Objectives
- Accompany high-potential sportsmen and women in achieving their goals, requiring substantial financial commitments;
- Put athletes in the best possible conditions to perform, whether for the purchase of equipment, travel to competitions, high-level training courses, coaching or dietetics.
How to apply?
Sportsmen and women must apply and are then selected by a jury of top-level sports experts, chaired by Christian Assaf.
In 2022:
- 53 athletes: 30 sportspeople (56.6%) and 23 sportswomen (43.3%), including 3 ambassadors and 2 ambassadors.
- Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's financial support amounted to €68,500.
In 2023:
- 28 athletes: 18 sportspeople (64.3%) and 10 sportswomen (35.7%).
- Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's financial support amounted to €40,000.
In 2024:
- 61 athletes: 37 sportspeople (60.6%) and 24 sportswomen (39.4%) including 1 ambassador and 4 ambassadors.
- Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's financial support amounted to €96,000.
Since these schemes were launched in 2022, Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole has supported 142 athletes to the tune of €204,500.
To become a member of Team Montpellier Haut niveau, sportsmen and women must apply, and their selection is made by a jury of experts in top-level and professional sport chaired by Christian ASSAF.
