Shared gardens

The city of Montpellier has 35 shared gardens. Designed to be cultivated collectively by the residents of a neighborhood, they meet their needs and expectations.

The opportunity for Sunday gardeners to exchange ideas with real experts. These gardens also encourage encounters, regardless of age, culture or social background. They are also a means of connecting different living environments: schools, leisure centers, retirement homes and hospitals. Their surface area ranges from 80 to 2,300 m2 in Montpellier.

To access an existing garden

• You need to contact the association running the shared garden in question directly.
• If you have difficulty getting in touch with the associations, it is possible to call the Nature, Agroecology and Landscapes Department (DNAP): 0467209900

To create a shared garden

The idea is usually proposed by a group of residents from the same neighborhood, who need to find a plot within that perimeter.

• If a plot has already been located, the commune can help you identify its owner.
• If you need help finding a plot, contact your commune.

To create a shared garden, it's essential to set up an association or join an existing one.

The garden is then entrusted to the association for a limited, renewable period.

The success of the shared garden lies in its associative nature, which gives responsibility to all participants.

• Each garden adheres to the City of Montpellier's Charter for Shared Gardens
• Ecological management is applied in each garden to preserve the urban ecosystem. So, don't use pesticides, adopt a zero-phyto approach, recuperate rainwater, install mulching so as not to leave the soil bare and to preserve it.
• Montpellier offers free gardening animations aimed at the general public, schoolchildren and gardeners.e.s, with the "Montpellier Main Verte".
