A new approach to urban planning
Health-Friendly Urbanism is an approach that considers planning and urban design choices to be key factors in well-being, health, the environment and climate.
The Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique defines Health-Friendly Urban Planning as "an approach based on health determinants (environmental, socio-economic and individual) and well-being that aims to support the development of planning policies and urban projects to encourage choices that minimize exposure to risk factors such as air pollution, noise pollution, urban heat islands, social isolation...and encourages exposure to protective factors such as physical activity, access to healthcare and green spaces. It pays particular attention to health inequalities and supports actions that contribute to adaptation and mitigation strategies, and that present health-environment-climate co-benefits."
Thus, it's a cross-functional, participatory approach that involves numerous departments and skills within the local authority.
The city's objectives are to raise awareness and train local authority players concerned by the Health-Friendly Urban Planning approach to develop a common culture and encourage cross-functionality on urban planning and development projects, and to develop and distribute a Health Impact Assessment toolbox.

Projet d'Urbanisme Favorable à la Santé for the development of Edith Piaf Park

The City of Montpellier is the winner of the Ademe "Expé Urba Santé" call for expressions of interest, with its project entitled "Green life in a Montpellier park".
Through this project, the City wishes to encourage the reappropriation of the magnificent Edith Piaf Park by local residents and families attending the crèche.
The planned developments aim to encourage gentle mobility, the development of creativity, motor skills, curiosity and emotions for everyone in contact with the Mediterranean flora and fauna present.
The concept of "Ville à hauteur d'enfants" will be implemented by creating play and discovery spaces adapted to their size and needs. At the same time, the area around the park will be developed to encourage active mobility, such as walking and le vélo.
The street furniture will be renewed and an educational trail will be created to raise public awareness of local flora and fauna, while stimulating the senses and motor development of the youngest.
