Mobility Plan 2032

Managing today's and tomorrow's mobility is a key issue for an ecological and inclusive transition in the territory. The Mobility Plan 2032, adopted by the Metropolitan Council on February 1, 2021, helps to combat climate change and improve the quality of life of the region's inhabitants and users.

The 5 main orientations of the mobility plan

  • "Quarter-hour" neighborhoods, towns and villages.
  • Bicycles, a real everyday mode of transport.
  • A structured road network to relieve local roads.
  • The public transport network strengthened.
  • "Multimodal exchange hubs".

Taking all modes of travel into account

The strategy takes into account the diversity of everyone's modes of travel. Indeed, according to our needs and constraints, depending on our family and professional lives, days and schedules, we may be pedestrians, cyclists, motorists or public transport users.

Extended mobility, in cooperation with neighboring communities

Already, several operations are being studied with partners already committed alongside the Metropole: neighboring Intercommunalités, as well as the Département de l'Hérault, the Occitanie Region, the SNCF and the State.

Improving coach services on the A750

This will be achieved in particular on the Gignac-West section of Montpellier, with high service level coaches and reserved lanes, thus greatly improving the quality of service.

"L'Étoile montpelliéraine"

A new public transport service is being studied. It is aimed primarily at people who live outside the metropolis but work there. This deployment is in view, both on the road network (6 branches of the "star") and on the rail network (2 branches).

The Mobility Committee, a forum for dialogue and proposals

Consultation on the Mobility Plan is underway. It relies in particular on the Mobility Committee. Set up in May 2022, it involves companies and users in defining and assessing the Metropole's mobility policies. It works in concrete ways, for example on the use of cargo bikes or mobility for people with disabilities.

Lessons from the public meeting on September 4, 2024

Wednesday, September 4, 2024, a public meeting was held to present the draft Plan Des Mobilités 2032 at the Hôtel de Métropole.

A total of 70 people attended: residents, economic players (Crédit Agricole, CHU, association des entreprises de Garosud...), user associations (Personnes à Mobilité Réduite, parents d'élèves, Vélocité...) and employee and employer union representatives...

After a presentation of the salient elements of the diagnosis, the strategy of the Mobility Plan 2032 project and the objectives set in terms of modal shares, two representatives of the Mobility Partners Committee gave evidence of its members' thoughts on supporting the transition of mobility for professionals and the general public.

The 2nd part of the evening gave rise to numerous exchanges with the room around the major objectives targeted by the project's action plan:

  • reducing traffic in urban cores and calming centralities,
  • treating urbanization in line with demographic trends and the mobility strategy,
  • improving the public transport network,
  • develop alternative networks,
  • give a real place to active modes,
  • rationalize car use,
  • inform users and support them in their choice of mobility...

Topics include: future developments in public transport offerings (Metropolitan Regional Express Service project, reinforcement of the TER offering, line 5 and extension of tramway line 1, commissioning of the first bustram lines...), changes to the traffic plan, conditions for sharing public space, expected developments around the future bicycle ring, safer circulation at the heart of pedestrian spaces.

The evening concluded with a reminder of the need to open up the Metropole's Mobility project to neighboring territories, particularly with regard to logistics flows.

Results of the public inquiry

A single public inquiry was held from February 11 to March 19, 2025 to gather public comments and proposals relating to Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole's draft Plan Des Mobilités (PDM) 2032.

459 contributions were collected, representing a total of 894 observations(699 via the dematerialized register, 64 via the paper registers in the communes, 48 letters and 83 attachments).

After analyzing all the observations collected, the Commission d'Enquête gave the Metropole a "favorable opinion, without reservation" on the project.
