Montpellier sets up a Sentinel Pollinarium to combat allergies more effectively
Every year in France, 20% of children and 30% of adults suffer from pollen allergy, with symptoms ranging from simple rhinitis to allergic asthma. These figures are, moreover, constantly on the rise, thanks to atmospheric pollution and climate change, which will modify the length of the pollen season, the distribution of species and the quantity and form of pollen released.
There is a medical consensus on the value of starting anti-inflammatory treatment before the onset of allergenic contact. In order to detect the release of allergenic pollens as early as possible and enable allergy sufferers to adapt their treatment, a sentinel pollinarium is currently being developed in Montpellier on the Grammont estate.
What is a sentinel pollinarium?
It's an observation garden maintained by the city, where the main allergenic species in the region are planted. Every day, professional gardeners observe the different species and record information on the start and end of pollen emissions. Validated by botanists and allergist physicians, these alerts are immediately transmitted by newsletter to subscribers.
On receipt of the information, allergy sufferers can not only adopt the right gestures, but also start their treatment at the optimum time (i.e. before the first symptoms appear), making it more effective, and stop it as soon as the pollen emission ends.
A valuable tool for anticipating allergies
Every day, expert gardeners keep a close eye on the different plant species present in the pollinarium. As soon as the first pollen grains appear, an alert is triggered and sent to subscribers by newsletter. This valuable information enables allergy sufferers to anticipate symptoms and adapt their treatment accordingly.
What are the benefits?
- More effective treatment: by starting treatment before the first symptoms appear, allergy sufferers can better control their reactions.
- Improved quality of life: by reducing symptoms, pollinariums help improve the daily lives of allergy sufferers.
- Real-time information: thanks to regular alerts, allergy sufferers are always informed of the pollen situation.
