Chickadee or robin nesting box

The chickadee or robin nesting box is one of the wildlife-friendly devices set up by the City of Montpellier. It's a wooden shelter measuring 23 cm high, 14 cm wide and 14 cm deep.

The nesting box must be set up exclusively in a garden: your garden or that of your residence (having first obtained the agreement of your condominium manager).

Recommendations

Location

  • The nest box should be positioned in an area of low disturbance, choose a quiet spot.
  • The nest box should be placed in a tree, along a trunk, or a large branch, inside the crown.
  • Position the nest box away from prevailing winds.
  • Minimum height: 3 m. Make sure there are no horizontal branches nearby, to limit predator attacks (cats).

Orientation

  • Flyhole exposure: south, southeast. Slight downward inclination to avoid water ingress.
  • The nesting box should not be in full, sunlight, but protected by tree foliage.

Fixing

Use sturdy fasteners that do not damage the trees.

Maintenance

  • Clean the inside of the nesting boxes: moss, down and droppings every winter and check the fasteners.
  • The nesting boxes must not be painted or varnished.
