What is a local currency?

The principle is to develop the local economy by promoting local trade and production.

According to a study published in 2022 by the Sol movement, 48% of individual members of a local currency claim to consume more local products since joining. Graines cannot be stored in a bank account and speculate on the financial markets.

The local currency also has a social and solidarity dimension: the funds recovered can be used to finance social projects on a metropolitan level. Every euro you exchange in Graine is put into a guarantee fund in an ethical bank, which is used to finance projects with high ecological, social and cultural value in our territory.

With a local currency you know where your money goes, where it circulates and the type of activity it finances.

The advantages of a local currency

  • Stimulating the local economy: local currency is designed to circulate within a circumscribed territory. By encouraging local exchanges, it helps stimulate the local economy by promoting local businesses and shops.
  • Strengthening social ties: using a local currency encourages greater interaction between members of the territory. Local transactions strengthen social ties
  • Supporting small businesses: local currency helps small local businesses by creating demand for their products and services.
  • Reducing environmental impact: by promoting local exchanges, local currency helps reduce the need for long-distance transport, which in turn can reduce the carbon footprint associated with trade.
  • Economic autonomy: by having their own monetary system, territories can increase their economic autonomy and reduce their dependence on national or international monetary systems.
  • Economic resilience: local currency makes territories more resilient in the face of global economic fluctuations. In times of financial instability, a local economy supported by a local currency is more resilient.
  • Fair trade promotion: local currency is designed with values such as fairness and sustainability in mind. This can encourage companies to adopt more responsible business practices.
  • Preserving cultural diversity: local currency helps preserve cultural diversity by supporting local artisans, regional products and cultural traditions.
