Learn Occitan

What if your child could learn Occitan? It's possible in Montpellier, with an occitan curriculum from Francis Garnier kindergarten to Lycée Clemenceau, via the collèges Clemenceau, Clémence Royer, Joffre and those in Clapiers and Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone. And this is the case for 1,350 pupils in the Metropole.
Temps de lecture : 2 minutes

Which schools speak Occitan?

  • The Francis Garnier nursery school and the Marie de Sévigné elementary school provide bilingual French/Occitan teaching, with equal hours in the timetable.
  • Occitan lessons are also taught 45 minutes a week at the écoles Anatole France, Alphonse Daudet, Olympe de Gouges and Jules Simon.

Why learn Occitan?

Learning another language presents a variety of opportunities for a child:

  • Access to a bi-plurilingual education from an early age,
  • Learn other subjects more easily thanks to the abilities enhanced by bilingualism,
  • Facilitate the study of other Latin languages (Spanish...),
  • Value the language and culture of the territory in which he or she is growing up,
  • Foster the discovery of other cultures.

The teaching methods offered in Montpellier are:

  • The bilingual curriculum: teaching is on an hourly parity basis (12 hours in French and 12 hours in Occitan), on a voluntary basis. National Education teachers are trained to the same standards as any other school teacher.
  • Enhanced teaching: one or more subjects are taught in Occitan for up to 3 hours a week. All pupils in schools that offer it benefit.
  • L'initiation : 45 minutes of occitan per week, integrated into the various educational pathways (artistic, citizenship...).

Did you know? Occitan is a regional language spoken in southern France, as well as in parts of Italy (Alpine valleys) and Spain (Val d'Aran).
