Why learn Occitan?
Learning another language presents a variety of opportunities for a child:
- Access to a bi-plurilingual education from an early age,
- Learn other subjects more easily thanks to the abilities enhanced by bilingualism,
- Facilitate the study of other Latin languages (Spanish...),
- Value the language and culture of the territory in which he or she is growing up,
- Foster the discovery of other cultures.
The teaching methods offered in Montpellier are:
- The bilingual curriculum: teaching is on an hourly parity basis (12 hours in French and 12 hours in Occitan), on a voluntary basis. National Education teachers are trained to the same standards as any other school teacher.
- Enhanced teaching: one or more subjects are taught in Occitan for up to 3 hours a week. All pupils in schools that offer it benefit.
- L'initiation : 45 minutes of occitan per week, integrated into the various educational pathways (artistic, citizenship...).
