Identity card and passport

The Carte Nationale d'Identité (CNI) enables its holder to provide proof of French nationality and identity. It is valid as a travel document in certain European Union and non-EU countries.

The period of validity varies from 10 to 15 years, depending on the type of card.

The biometric passport is both proof of identity and French nationality, as well as a travel document for travel abroad. It is valid for 10 years.

Attestation d'accueil d'un étranger

Any non-European foreign national wishing to travel to France for a private or family visit must have an attestation d'accueil to obtain a visa. This attestation must be drawn up at the town hall by a local resident. It is subject to certain conditions regarding accommodation and resources.
