Exhibition "Prophecy is memory, belief is synthetic" by Mona Young-eun Kim

The Espace Dominique Bagouet is pleased to host, from November 26, 2025 to January 18, 2026, the exhibition Prophecy is Memory, Belief is Synthetic by Mona Young-eun Kim. Inspired by the remarkable archives of medical education in Montpellier, this exhibition brings together works created by the artist that engage in dialogue with reproductions of historical texts. This artistic journey invites visitors to immerse themselves in a dystopian visual and sonic universe, where archives and works created using artificial intelligence coexist. Exhibition opening: Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. Conceived by Mona Young-eun Kim, the project "Prophecy is Memory, Belief is Synthetic" opens a space for dialogue between memory, current events, and contemporary creation. Using books and documents related to anatomy, the description of pathologies, and the history of healthcare, sourced from the University of Montpellier and the Hérault Departmental Archives, the artist sketches a new anthropology of the future. Continuing her project of an imaginary anatomy museum, Mona Young-eun Kim conceives the exhibition as a fictional archive, presented in the form of an archaeological relic. In this way, she invites visitors to imagine the beliefs and biological structures of a hypothetical future. Influenced by Alain Resnais's film All the Memory of the World, Mona Young-eun Kim explores the potential dialogue between two methods of producing, preserving, and processing memory: the handwritten and tangible memory of the past, and the algorithmic and speculative memory of the future, generated by artificial intelligence. With this project, Kim offers a skillful interweaving of art and science, exploring the tools these two fields provide for understanding our contemporary world. BIOGRAPHY Mona Young-eun Kim is originally from South Korea and lives and works in Antony, France. After earning a double degree in philosophy and film from Dongguk University in Seoul in 2012, she continued her studies at MO.CO. Esba in Montpellier, where she obtained the Diplôme National Supérieur d'Expression Plastique (DNSEP) in 2018. Today, Mona Young-eun Kim is a visual artist and professor at the École supérieure d'art et de design de Reims (Reims School of Art and Design). She develops an artistic practice that explores the near future, navigating between sculpture, new technologies, and stained glass art. Winner of the Printemps program at the Cité internationale des arts, she moved to Paris in 2020. Since then, she has participated in numerous residencies, notably at La Centrale gallery Powerhouse in Montreal (2023) and at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris (2024). Her work has also been presented in many institutions in France and internationally, including the Frac Île-de-France, the Casino Luxembourg – Forum d'art contemporain in Luxembourg, the AKT in Pforzheim, and the MO.CO. Panacée in Montpellier.

Reopening exhibition of the Pavillon Populaire "Extrême Hôtel" by Raymond Depardon

EXTREME HOTEL is the name of a hotel in Addis Ababa, a simple place where Raymond Depardon likes to stay during his travels in Ethiopia. A modest base, a quiet place from which to observe the world. The exhibition follows this idea: taking the time to observe what surrounds us. It brings together nearly 150 color photographs, from the 1960s to the present day, and is organized into several series, including The Land of the Peasants, The DATAR, USA, Cartagena, and Tokyo. These images reveal a dual story: that of the photojournalist, during the heyday of news agencies and striking magazine front pages; and that of a man, the son of a farmer, whose gaze gradually shifted towards a freer and more intimate observation of the world. For this "carte blanche" exhibition, Raymond Depardon has opened his color archives to the Pavillon Populaire. He presents his work published in the press during his career as a photojournalist: from Queen Elizabeth to the Lebanese Civil War, from the Olympic Games to the Françoise Claustre affair. Throughout the exhibition, we also discover other, more solitary series in which Raymond Depardon spontaneously photographs places devoid of events, scenes of ordinary life, paying close attention to color and light. This exploration continues today with USA, a new series shot with a large-format camera in Texas, New Mexico, and South Dakota. Each series is a journey, a way of being in the world. Raymond Depardon offers us a colorful exploration of the countries he has traveled through and the feelings that accompanied him during his many stays across the globe. By taking us along on his travels, he teaches us a simple and humanist photography that deeply touches the traveler in each of us. Marie Perennès and Simon Depardon, curators of the exhibition Exhibition Itinerary 1. The Land of the Peasants Created in the 2000s, La Terre des Paysans (The Land of the Peasants) is Raymond Depardon's homage to his roots, a rural world he had long neglected, caught up in the pace of current events. Color accompanies this return to the land, to childhood, to what shaped him. Born in 1942 on a farm in the Saône Valley, Raymond Depardon still cherishes the gestures of his parents and the scenes of daily life in the farmyard, where he took his first color photographs with a Rolleiflex camera. One of the images from the series The Land of the Peasants, the portrait of Marcel Privat, has now become a postage stamp, a discreet symbol of a rural France that is gradually disappearing. 2. Press Color Black and white long dominated photojournalism, perceived as the language of seriousness and truth. Only the covers of major weekly magazines like Paris Match or Life were an exception: color became a tool of seduction, designed to make an impact and capture attention at newsstands. Photographers then worked with two cameras: one loaded with black and white film for the report, the other with color film to try and land the cover, the true Holy Grail for photojournalists. Featuring press clippings from Raymond Depardon's personal archives, the "Press Color" section traces his career as a photojournalist: from Algeria to Vietnam, from the Olympic Games to the Claustre affair. Initially working for the press, color became for him the starting point for a freer, more personal, and more intimate style of photography. 3. The Datar In 1984, the DATAR (Interministerial Delegation for Regional Planning and Attractiveness) commissioned several photographers, including Raymond Depardon, to document the French landscape. Inspired by photographers such as Walker Evans, Paul Strand, and Robert Frank, Depardon recognized the importance of photographing his own territory and chose to return to his childhood home, the family farm. Shot in color with a large-format camera, the series meticulously captures even the smallest, seemingly insignificant details: a play of light, an oilcloth on a table, a wallpaper pattern. This more intimate approach to his subject marked a turning point in his practice. Thus began a demanding period of work with the large-format camera, which would give rise, 20 years later, to major series such as La France, or more recently, USA. Practical Information Open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm (closed between 12pm and 2pm) Free entry. Last entry 15 minutes before closing. Accessible to people with disabilities. Exhibition "The Other Side of the Ordinary World"

Espace Saint-Ravy is pleased to host, from January 10th to February 1st, 2026, the exhibition "Verso du Monde Ordinaire" (The Other Side of the Ordinary World), bringing together a selection of works created by artists from the Esat Ateliers Kennedy and La Bulle Bleue. This exhibition invites visitors to immerse themselves in a space of artistic creation, but also in the "extraordinary" world of these artists. Opening reception Friday, January 9th at 6:30 pm. Verso du Monde Ordinaire is a choral exhibition project by artists from Ateliers Kennedy and La Bulle Bleue. Guided by artist Mathieu Renault, in residence since 2021, participants explore their creativity through weekly workshops. Built around each individual's expressive breath, these workshops do not aim to seek an orthodoxy of gestures, but rather propose the use of different tools, supports and mediums, in order to support and increase the strength and emotional power of the various practices. The works presented, the result of self-taught approaches, correspond to the materialization of an inner world: projections and intimate desires, without the filters of our "ordinary world," as the users of the Esat call it. This exhibition is part of a larger project addressing the needs of people with disabilities in the Montpellier metropolitan area and the Hérault department. It is based on a social innovation approach to create an inclusive workspace. The Artists The artists represented in the exhibition are: Marion Mateu, Cyril Leroy, Jean-René Battistelli, Aurianne Vivien, Nicolas Contes, Sylvie Salmeron, Séverine Fabre, Guillaume Castan, Aurélien Assencio, Jean-Baptiste Célié, Sébastien Ramos, Anthony Gros-Audibert, David Champion, Mathieu Beaufort, Marie-Dominique Jardinier, Yahn Boyer, Julien Colombo, Denise Lafleur, Ilham Jbilou, Alain Paradis, Maxime Causse, Marie Fol and Samy Hazak. The Kennedy Workshops and the Blue Bubble are part of ADPEP 34, an association recognized as a public utility since the beginning of the 20th century. Founded on the values of secularism, justice and solidarity, the association aims to combat isolation, injustice and social exclusion among children, young people and adults. Mathieu Renault trained in visual arts in Latin America. He rediscovered Montpellier in 2008, settled there, and joined the Atelier du Nord collective in the Figuerolles district. In his personal practice, he uses the "anonymous tear" to create pictorial landscapes from the layers of posters torn from the city walls. Through painting and manipulating the patterns of color and text on the posters, which he considers the molts of urban space, he reveals their poetic power.
