Year of study with internship at Maison de Montpellier

The year 1961 saw the signing of twinning agreements between the cities of Montpellier and Heidelberg. Originally driven by strong links between the universities and schools of the two cities, the twinning links are now rich and dynamic between the two towns.
A university exchange program via a scholarship therefore exists quite naturally, and enables a young Montpellier native to discover Heidelberg, a young and student city, and home to a famous university dating back to the 14th century, allowing him or her a total immersion in the heart of German culture.
Program
The program includes:
- A scholarship of around €700 net per month (employee status with the Heidelberg Town Hall and contribution to the pension insurance fund)
- An internship at the Maison de Montpellier (12h/week on average, variable depending on the cultural program)
- Possibility of completing an ERASMUS program or joining the German curriculum (depending on disciplines, ECTS recognition must be checked in advance with the home faculty)
Language level
Students with a German language level B2 can take part in normal courses and enroll for a bachelor's or master's degree.
Internship schedule
The intern's work largely consists of:
- assisting the team in preparations for the Maison program (information searches, contacts with artists or institutions...)
- inform Heidelberg residents about the City of Montpellier for a tourist or study stay
- sell products from the metropolis (wines, olives...)
- manage reservations for our guest room or wine cellar
- help the team with events throughout the year (Heidelberger Herbst, Wine Show, Bal populaire, readings, concerts, exhibitions...)
Accommodation
Furnished student rooms for rent at the Maison de Montpellier, right in the center of the old town, close to the university square and numerous faculties. Various bus stops less than 5 minutes' walk away.
Rent ranges from 255€ to 435€ per month, depending on the room chosen. All utilities are included in the rent (water, electricity, heating and Wifi).
It should be noted that the rent is around €150 below the rental market. In return, residents undertake to help prepare and run the Maison de Montpellier's activities (up to 12h/month in addition to internship hours).
It should be noted that this program is implemented by the Cities of Montpellier and Heidelberg as part of their twinning

Summer science courses

Science internships in Heidelberg from July 12 to August 8, 2026
The City of Heidelberg in Germany is organizing, in partnership with the City of Montpellier, and in cooperation with renowned scientific institutions, "The International Summer Science School of Heidelberg", from July 12 to August 8, 2026.
Application deadline: Friday, February 27, 2026.
This summer school enables 2 high school students in Première or Terminale, aged at least 16, with very good results in science and a good knowledge of English, to do a 4-week internship under the guidance of scientists, in renowned institutes and laboratories in Heidelberg.
The scientific program
The first week of "The International Summer Science School Heidelberg" begins with an orientation day and presentation of the ISH program. Participants from the same twin city will give a jointly-made presentation (approx. 15 minutes in English), in which they introduce their city and country.
The second part of the first week consists of a one-day joint workshop in the ExploLearnLab and a 3-day joint workshop in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), the Max-Planck-Institute of Nuclear Physics and the Max-Planck-Institute of Astronomy/House of Astronomy. These initial contacts with research techniques and theories pave the way for practical work in the institutes.
The scientific program proper begins in the second week, with 3-week internships at the institutes. Rigorous work and initiative of their own are therefore required of participants.
The working language of "The International Summer Science School" Heidelberg is English, so very good knowledge of this language is a prerequisite for participation.
Pre-selected candidates will be interviewed in English by a member of the International Relations team of the City of Heidelberg.
General program and organization
"The International Summer Science School" is a program of the City of Heidelberg, in partnership with its twin cities, in agreement with the Scientific Committee. The program coordinators in Heidelberg draw up a general, cultural and leisure program and take care of the group outside their institutes and are interlocutors in case of questions or problems.
The entire group of ISH participants is accommodated at the ISG hotel in the Boxberg district. Breakfast and dinner are taken as a group at the hotel.
Participation costs for the International Summer Science School Heidelberg (ISH)
As part of the promotion of international youth exchanges and up-and-coming scientists in our twin cities, the ISH is funded by the City of Heidelberg and the participating Institutes.
Travel expenses are the responsibility of the participants.
The cost of participating in the program is €300; this sum represents the cost of accommodation, half-board, the internship and the general program. However, the City of Montpellier will award a €200 grant to selected high school students.
Eligibility criteria
- Have very good results in science,
- Be 16 years old, in Première or Terminale scientifique and not yet having started higher education.
- Reside in Montpellier or its Metropole
