Increasingly accessible roads

The City of Montpellier and the Metropolis are very attentive to the living conditions of disabled people. To help them get around more easily, special facilities have been designed to ensure easy access to urban spaces and transport.
Temps de lecture : 2 minutes

As part of the Plan de mise en Accessibilité de la Voirie et des Espaces publics (PAVE), the City of Montpellier has undertaken a diagnosis of the accessibility of its roadways.

The results are as follows:

  • 74% of crosswalks are up to standard
  • 45% of pedestrian walkways are accessible, despite the narrowness of the streets in the medieval city center and their steep gradients (>1m40 wide) over 660 km of roadway

With regard to audible junctions, in order to facilitate travel for people with disabilities, specific layouts provide great accessibility to urban space and transport.

For example, 250 of France's 350 intersections are equipped with some of the most effective audible traffic lights in France, dedicated to the visually impaired or blind. They not only indicate the name of the street, but also the direction in which the pedestrian is heading.

Assessment of actions taken

Each year, the Commission Communale pour l'Accessibilité draws up an assessment of the actions undertaken by the City in the field of disability.

Highlights include:

  • Launched project to renovate and make accessible the Comédie and Esplanade (2022-2025)
  • PMR on-street parking spaces: 1,169 spaces
  • Trams and buses are accessible, as are 100% of streetcar stations and 85% of bus stops
  • Replacement of guide strips for the visually impaired on the forecourt of Saint-Roch station
  • Consultation with the CLCPH on work on the tram line 5, the extension of line 1 to the Sud de France TGV station and future bustrams (high service level buses)
  • Awareness of disability issues among TaM users at the Mobility and Accessibility Day on April 30, 2022
